Planning and discussions regarding improvements to the transfer station have been ongoing for many years. There were plans to construct an access road at the Grotto Avenue station for a new entrance/exit to Concord Street allowing the trucks to use that industrial route to access the highway. As planning progressed, however, it became clear that this was not a realistic option due to the wetlands and environmental issues.
Discussions around relocating from the current location at 240 Grotto Avenue began over three years ago with residents and businesses to lessen the neighborhood impact. The Grotto Avenue station directly abuts a dense residential area, as well as an elementary school and has no direct access to the highway or freight rail, necessitating truck traffic on neighborhood streets. It is the City’s goal to address the neighborhood impact to improve quality of life in a cost effective manner.
The relocation process includes oversight, input and many opportunities for public input with the Department of Environmental Management (DEM), the Planning Commission and Zoning Board.
