Pawtucket – Before a large gathering of many Pawtucket residents, family, neighbors, friends and elected officials, the field located at 1135 Roosevelt Avenue, was dedicated to Edward “Ted” Warnock this past Sunday.
Alongside members of the Warnock Family, Mr. Warnock’s daughter, Dawn, began the dedication ceremony with a touching speech commemorating her father. She recalled many fond memories of her father and what he meant to the family and the community. She also noted how touched the Warnock family is that the field, located directly across the street from her family’s home, will honor her father’s memory.
Prior to the unveiling of the sign in front of the field, Mayor Donald R. Grebien spoke of the process in which the field was acquired and how it came to be dedicated to Mr. Warnock’s memory. “When Mr. Warnock’s name came up, everyone was immediately in agreement,” said Grebien.
The Warnock Family, joined by Mayor Grebien, unveiled the sign for the crowd to cheers and applause. The sign bears the name “Edward ‘Ted’ Warnock Memorial Field.” Beneath his name appears the word “Coach.” A moment of silence was held before Matt Hudak, who spearheaded the effort to have the field dedicated to the memory of Mr. Warnock, spoke of the caliber of man Mr. Warnock was and his impact on his life, as well as anyone who met him.
Mr. Warnock, was an accomplished long distance runner, champion spear fisherman and legendary skin diver. He held many prestigious awards for each sport, including a National Athlete of the Year title and a world record. Mr. Warnock led an exceptional life and cared deeply about youth sports and athletics. He was a teacher at Tolman High School and coached the cross country and track teams while at Tolman. “I am so pleased that this field will be a resource for athletes and those that just enjoy taking part in a game of any sort,” said Mayor Grebien.
The sign for the field is located at the corner of Roosevelt Avenue and Mendon Avenue and faces the front door of the Warnock Family home. The field dedication took place on what would have been Mr. Warnock’s 77th birthday.
