Reusable Bag Initiative to Provide Cleaner and Greener Alternative for Residents

Pawtucket – The City of Pawtucket and Pawtucket City Council have announced the Reusable Bag Initiative to encourage more sustainable behavior by Pawtucket businesses and residents. Two thousand reusable bags were funded through the City, a donation from Mega Disposal, and a grant from Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation (RIRRC).

“The Reusable Bag Initiative will help to raise awareness that, the more times residents use their re-usable bags, the less single-use plastic bags that end up in our landfills or polluting our environment,” said Mayor Donald R. Grebien. “I thank the City Council for their leadership as well as RIRRC and Mega Disposal for their funding.”

“Thank you to Keep Blackstone Valley Beautiful, RIRRC, DPW, and my colleagues on the City Council for believing in this initiative. Simple changes can make a difference in reducing the amount of waste we produce and promoting a cleaner, greener Pawtucket environment,” said Councilor Elena Vasquez who spearheaded the initiative. “I'm excited to see all the waste reduction from plastic bags. Small steps can make a difference.”

Initiatives encouraging sustainable behavior and distribution of the bags are supported by the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council, Keep Blackstone Valley Beautiful, the Pawtucket Planning Department, and the Department of Public Works. Re-usable bags will be available for pick-up at the front counter once you enter Pawtucket City Hall while supplies last.
