Pawtucket Announces Funds for Local Businesses to Improve their Façades

Pawtucket – Today, Mayor Donald R. Grebien announced the launch of the City of Pawtucket’s Façade Improvement Program to assist local businesses with improvements to create a more welcoming and vibrant streetscape.

“This is another tool in the toolbox for our small businesses to help them grow and succeed as they reinvest in our community. These improvements to our community are very valuable as businesses continue to relocate here and foot-traffic to the City increases with the opening of breweries and the future commuter rail station,” said Mayor Grebien.

“I am excited that the City is launching the Façade Improvement Program to help local businesses make their long awaited improvements a reality,” said City Councilor Sandra Cano. “Thank you to the City Council for supporting these efforts to improve our community.”

“Pawtucket is always looking for ways to support our local businesses and improve the community for our residents,” said Sue Mara, Acting Director of Planning and Redevelopment. “Our office also offers various services for businesses such as a streamlined permitting process, development incentives, and business counseling.”

The program offers small grants and grant-loan combinations. For small grants, applicants may request up to $2,000 for materials for small improvements. For larger projects, the City will offer a loan for half of the total project up to $15,000 and a grant through federal Community Development Block Grants up to $30,000. The loan is structured to be paid within five years.

Projects may include:

  • Replacement or installation of new awnings, doors, landscape, lighting, paving, siding, or windows

  • Decorative material

  • Code-compliance

  • Public-facing street or sidewalk improvements, such as bicycle hitches, interactive elements, interpretive signage, planters, seating, or lighting.

Businesses can learn more and apply by visiting the City’s website: http://www.pawtucketri.com/planning-redevelopment. The first round of decisions will be announced in late March. The City anticipates offering several rounds of funding throughout the year.
