Mayor Grebien Welcomes Dr. Michael Fine as Health Liaison

Pawtucket – The City of Pawtucket and Mayor Grebien have announced that Michael Fine, MD will serve as City of Pawtucket’s Health Liaison, providing his professional services to the City.

“We are fortunate to be able to bring on someone with the pedigree of Dr. Michael Fine to work with the City as the Health Liaison,” said Mayor Donald R. Grebien. “Dr. Fine’s assistance will prove beneficial as we move forward on multiple fronts with the aim of providing the community with access to good and affordable health care services.”

Dr. Fine, who served as the Director of the Rhode Island Department of Health from February 2011 to March 2015, has been an advocate for communities and healthcare reform for decades. He currently serves as the Senior Population Health and Clinical Services Officer at Blackstone Valley Community Health Care (BVCHC) and as the Health Policy Advisor to Mayor James A. Diossa in Central Falls.

“We have a great opportunity to work together and to protect and improve the health of everyone in Pawtucket,” said Dr. Fine. “There are challenges to be sure, but a little data together with great primary care and prevention teamed with the strength of Pawtucket’s communities will let us keep everyone in Pawtucket well.”

As Health Liaison, Dr. Fine is working with local college students on a community health plan for the city with the goal of mitigating negative health risk trends to improve the city’s overall public health. With the closure of Memorial Hospital, access to health and emergency care services has become far more difficult for the most vulnerable populations in Pawtucket and the Blackstone Valley.

The Grebien Administration continues to make abundantly clear that the Blackstone Valley needs emergency room services. Dr. Fine will assist as the City collaborates with the RI Department of Health to identify the specific needs in the community. Dr. Fine will also assist the City with the implementation of the fourth rescue to their emergency services. Over the past 4 plus years, 80% of all of Pawtucket emergency calls have been for emergency care services.
