Mayor Donald R. Grebien announced today that the City of Pawtucket, in partnership with its trash and recycling vendor, MTG Disposal, will provide an added service to Pawtucket residents seeking to get rid of old electronics, as well as mattresses and box springs. Beginning October 1, 2016, and continuing monthly on the first Saturday of each month, residents will be able to drop off mattresses, box springs, and old electronics known as e-waste at the parking lot across from City Hall on Roosevelt Avenue between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. for free.
Items like mattresses, box springs, and e-waste are handled differently than regular trash by Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation (RIRRC) at the Johnston Landfill and therefore require distinct collection processes. The City of Pawtucket offers these premium services to residents through separate curbside collections, by appointment. Curbside collection of mattresses and box springs requires a fee of $16 per item. The addition of this monthly drop off location will provide residents another option to dispose of these items at their convenience and free of charge. Residents may also dispose of these items at the transfer station during normal operating hours. This added service for residents was part of a suite of contract amendments the City negotiated with the vendor earlier this year that added services for the residents and saved taxpayers on the annual cost of the contract with the vendor.
“We are pleased to provide this added service for our residents and neighbors,” said Mayor Grebien. “Customer service is a top priority of my administration, and providing this added convenience for everyone in Pawtucket is another way for us to better serve the residents and taxpayers of our great city. The members of the City Council and I remain committed to improving services in cost-effective ways.”
