City, Council and Police Team Up to Get Guns Off the Street

PAWTUCKET- On October 28th the Pawtucket Police Department will be holding a gun buyback to get unwanted guns off city streets. The program will be held at the police substation at 270 Armistice Boulevard from 10:00 a.m. time to 2 p.m.

Residents can hand in any type of operable firearm with no questions asked. They will receive a gift card depending on the category of weapon.

"This partnership will continue to help us mitigate gun violence in our community,” said Mayor Donald R. Grebien. “We encourage anyone and everyone with a firearm that they no longer need or feel comfortable having, to take advantage of this program.

"Our first gun buyback program was a success,” said Councilman Albert Vitali. “We hope to collect additional firearms and get more guns off of our streets this year."

The gun buyback program is being sponsored by the City, the Council's Dare Committee, and local businesses through donations.

Individuals surrendering a firearm must show proof that they are a Pawtucket resident, such as a driver’s license or tax or utility bill. While gift cards will only be awarded for operable firearms, the Police Department will also accept unwanted “BB” or pellet guns, as well as unwanted ammunition during the event.

Gift cards for operable weapons will be given in the following amounts and categories: $50, rifle or shotgun; $100, pistol/revolver; $200, assault rifle, semi-automatic, detachable magazine, military style shoulder fired long gun, as determined by Pawtucket police. Firearms considered to be “junk” or inoperable will be accepted for disposal although they are ineligible for gift cards.

The following gun buyback procedures should be observed: Weapons should be transported unloaded in the trunk of your vehicle; firearms carried by hand must be placed in a bag or box; ammunition should be transported in a container separate from any firearm.
