Mayor appoints Jeremy Nascimento as liaison to disabled adult community

PAWTUCKET -- Mayor Donald R. Grebien announced that he has appointed city resident Jeremy Nascimentoas the Mayor’s Liaison to the Disabled Adult Community. Nascimento will begin his volunteer duties Tuesday, Nov. 1 with regular hours Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in his office on the third floor of City Hall, or by appointment. “My ongoing conversations and meetings with constituents have shown the need for such a role in the city because many of the people in our community who have disability challenges, as well as their families and loved ones, are uncertain where to turn when they need to seek assistance,” Grebien said. “Jeremy will be the contact person in my administration for adults with disability issues, and he will also work closely with our Senior Center to help provide information and access to services. He will report to me directly and be my eyes and ears so I can stay in tune with the disabled adult community’s issues and needs. He will also work on special projects with organizations like the Governor’s Commission on Disabilities to ensure that the city is up to date on compliance and other issues,” Grebien said. Nascimento, 32, who lives on North Bend Street, grew up in Pawtucket attending Curtis Elementary and Jenks Junior High schools before graduating from Davies Career and Technical High School. He earned an associate’s degree from Ashworth College, Norcross, Ga., in 2005 and a B.S. degree in business administration in 2006 from Colorado Technical University, Colorado Springs, both online. “I just adapted to the situation. That’s what worked for me,” he said. Nascimento, who has cerebral palsy but has lived independently for several years, said, “I don’t let it define who I am. I just work around it.” Nascimento said he sees his volunteer role as an opportunity to “provide a voice for the community as a whole. There are many issues that come up where I can help so their voice can be heard. It’s an opportunity I appreciate the mayor allowing me to do.” He also said he looks forward to working with the city’s Seniors Liaison, Beth Roberge, including where their functions may overlap. He currently volunteers at the ARC of Blackstone Valley, where he serves on the board’s advocacy committee, and formerly volunteered at PARI Independent Living Center, in Pawtucket. Besides his volunteer work Jeremy has worked as the receptionist at the ARC of Blackstone Valley and was the administrative assistant to the chief operating officer of the Rhode Island Chapter of the American Red Cross. To contact Nascimento, call 728-0500, ext. 487, email jnascimento@pawtucketri.com, or visit him in Room 304 at City Hall.(City Hall is handicapped accessible from the rear entrance.)
